BEST OF SHOW NYC 98: Hey Mister, Wanna Buy A Mac?
Tom Carrolan
|
Apple's PowerBook G3 The iMac was the star of Macworld Expo. But after you bask in the glow of the iMac, check out the PowerBook G3 series and see what's missing. The line is gone... between desktop and laptop computers. You can now get that PowerBook you've always wanted and have it meet all your needs. Then, sell the desktop Mac... keep the monitor, if it's seventeen inches or larger. Why "no line" anymore? The power is there -- it's a G3, silly. The keyboard is there -- and finally you get a number pad, ala Where's Waldo but it's there. Expansion is do-it-yourself easy -- everything's under the keyboard, no torx driver required. The display is there -- good enough to do Photoshop work on... is that good enough?! Is price an issue? Sure you pay extra for small but the PowerBook G3's start at $2200. Remember, you're ditching the desktop Mac so you can even splurge a bit on extras for $3500, load on [cheap] RAM, and still buy the cat some Starkist once a week. |

| The cover of the new PB G3 has a soft, grippy feel. Expo participants [many being native New Yorkers] did not hesitate to cop a feel. | ||||||
