4. The namesake of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is out numbered by the Saguaro through much of the monument.
The pipes do occur north of OPCNM but well south and west of Tucson. As you drive toward the park, watch for the first of their numbers in the area on the road maps known as the Papago Indian Reservation. Compare the Organ Pipe to the Senita and you'll note many more ridges on the Organ Pipe while the Senita has fewer [4-9]. The south-facing slopes of the monument are the best places to find the Organ Pipe Cacti. They are abundant in Mexico along with the Senita. Deeper into the desert -- south into Mexico -- there are monster species that look like the Organ Pipe and Senita. |
