5. The Desert Iguana of the Sonora is about a foot long which qualifies as a BIG lizard anywhere in North America. They're around but they are fast and not often seen even by those of us who go looking.

Many touristas visit the Sonoran Desert by going to the Sororan Desert Museum in Tucson. They have one or two of everything imprisoned there for our amusement and [questionable] education. It is hard to find most wild animals on your own without spending some time at it. But that's what it costs to get close. And with that time invested comes surprises. You do make your own luck.

This bad boy is a vegetarian though, as I guess the other iguanas species are too.

As long as we have room, let me introduce you to the Zebra-tailed Lizard; maybe five inches in length... if you stretch that tail flat out.

Notice the hind foot toes. See the shadow under it? For both rear feet, the toes are elevated up off the hot rock.
